Joining Santa Clara University Emergency Medical Services is a competitive multi-step process. Before applying to join the team, all applicants must obtain "Emergency Medical Technician - Basic" certification through an accredited training program. There are many options close to, or on, campus that students can enroll in to get their certification. In order to enroll in the on-campus class or interview for SCU EMS you must be a current undergraduate student. More information below.

STEP 1: Becoming EMT-B Certified
On Campus EMT-B Course: We offer a class during the academic year at Santa Clara University. More information about the class can be found here, along with information on how to register.
Off-Campus Options:
Many local agencies exist which offer EMT-B certification courses. A list of local agencies which offer certification courses and regulate practice in the state of California can be found here.

STEP 2: NREMT and CA State License
We require that you have passed your National Registry Exam. The instructors of your class should provide information on how to register for the exam. If you need more assistance, please email [email protected].

Interview sign-ups are available for fall quarter 2024. If you are interested in interviewing, please fill out this form by September 22nd.

The SCU EMS squad interview is an important way for us to connect with potential applicants and determine how well their personalities, skills, and commitment mesh with the values and goal of the team. The interview consists of two main parts:
- A traditional personal interview: Please bring your resume to the interview and expect to answer personal questions related to skills, strengths, weaknesses, values, leadership and personality.
- A mock call: come prepared to run a simulated emergency medical call response to demonstrate the skills you have acquired and the quality of care you are capable of providing.
