Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Training
Every year during spring quarter, SCU EMS hosts a large-scale MCI training event. This "Mass Casualty Incident" gives SCU EMS the opportunity to test our ability to respond to a large-scale medical emergency. It also gives the students and EMT's in training of Santa Clara University the opportunity to meet the squad, see how it functions, and participate in an interesting and educational activity. The MCI is performed in coordination with university officials, Campus Safety Services, and Santa Clara Fire Department personnel.
Volunteers are always needed to serve as patients for the MCI event. Volunteers are disguised with make-up and fake injuries to appear as though they have been part of a traumatic event. They are then given a small slip of paper with certain vitals signs listed that they are to report to any medical staff that ask. All "patients" are escorted to various places in the location of the MCI and asked to behave (with the exception of reporting vital signs) exactly as they assume they would given the injury they are supposed to have. The more real "patients" can make the event seem, the better training the event is for SCU EMS.
