It is designed to help students and SCU community members recognize medical problems when they arise and subsequently take appropriate, helpful action. Alcohol Intoxication and Poisoning:
This is an extremely dangerous condition which can arise, unsurprisingly, from consuming too much alcohol in too short a time period and can lead to unconsciousness, loss of memory, and death. It should be treated as an immediate and potentially life threatening emergency. The most important thing to remember is to call for help! You cannot afford to wait or guess. Symptoms:
Influenza (Flu):
The Flu is a temporary viral disease which is often confused with the common cold. The symptoms are similar, but it is important to recognize the difference so that medical care can be sought if conditions worsen. Seasonal influenza rarely results in a life-threatening viral condition, but can result in serious dehydration if left untreated. It is important to remember also that the Flu virus changes from year to year - the most important thing you can do to avoid contraction and spread is receive your yearly Flu shot (offered at the Cowell SHC). Sprains, Strains, and Fractures (Athletic Trauma):
All of these injuries can be extremely painful and debilitating, and many require immediate medical treatment. If you suspect that you have seriously injured any muscle, bone, or joint in your body, or if you are experiencing persistent pain in any of these locations. seek medical attention or call SCU EMS.
